HOPE FOR FARMERS.

The enormous importance of dairying is now apparent to all countries which are even remotely suitable for the purpose. It is, then, no wonder that our own Govern* ment is alive to this importance, and that it is now anxious that the almost unequalled advantages of this country for the production of butter and cheese should have fair scope for development. Unnfortunately, or rather fortunately, knowledge is the first requisite of success, and the Government has done well in having had printed an excellent digest on the subject, whioh has been prepared by a Special Committee of the Legislative Council, and which is now obtainable at the cost of sixpence. [ How the plans described as having been ; adopted by other and distant countries will suit the circumstances of our own colony is a question ; but the experiences of other seekers after the best way cannot but be aids in making a similar search here. We recommend a perusal of this pamphlet. While ! commending our rulers for their paternal consideration for the colony's welfare, it is worth while to remember that actual experiment is being made in our midst on an ' extensive scale, and with both enterprise and forethought, and possibly the records of the Freezing Company'sefforts, thereasonfor these efforts being put forth and the results obtained, would prove a very valuable addition to the information already collected in the report and appendix referred to. A full description of the Company's scheme of operations was given in a recent issue of this journal. This description appears to have created considerable local* interest, which is scarcely to be wondered at when it is remembered how pressing is the need for some organised plan for dealing with this large question. A Waikato contemporary writes bitterly of the treatment which it alleges the wheatgrowing formers of that district are receiving at the hands of wheat buyers. How far the farmers have been misled, or how far they have misunderstood is an open question, but one thing remains certain — j that, after all, the most reliable crop obtainable is that whioh can be secured in the milking pail. This is practically independent of the sparrow ana caterpillar scourgfc, and is not seriously affected by bad harvesting v. i/ifcher, and now that the Freezing Company u'^ cash buyers of manufactured milk, the difficulty of marketing is reduced to a minimum. On Wednesday last (the day appointed for visitors to inspect the dairy portion of the Freezing Company's works), the interest taken in this section of the Company's operations was evidenced by the fact that over two hundred presented themselves during the two hourß allowed for visiting. Mrs Fairfax and a party of ladies from the Government House with Mrs Devore were among those present. Captain Bernier and several officers of the French warship Fabert also formed a portion of the company. Messrs Peacock and Withy, M.H.R.'s, were visitors during an earlier portion of the day. If unanimous testimony is an infallible verdict, then certainly the Freezing Company have adopted the method, and the only method, likely to lead to success, and time alone is required for them to work out the problem before them to a satisfactory issue.
