PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL,
Tiie ordinary monthly infecting of the above Council was hold at Pheonix Hotel Morrinsvillo yesterday. Present j Cr.s Chepmell (Chairman), Williams/ Dibble, Gould, IJeany, Brunskill, Murphy and Mil]?. Minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence : — To Mr A. Buckland. requesting 1 payment of monies received re Tiannvay lea.°e, and an account oi all charges in connection theiowith. From Mr A . Auckland, in reply to application as above, forwarding cheque for I amount due Council (less sundry charges) amounting to £8G oild, and stating the amount would have been forwarded curlier [ were it not that he had been requested to hold the cheque- until eveiy thing had been completed. Leasing Waiorongomai Tramway : — To Mr H. Gilfillan, junr., Secretary to Bittery Company, stating the committee appointed by the Council to act in the matter, had arranged with Mr Adams to purchase three of the tramway horses at cost price less 2s per cent, and the fourth horse at such a price as might be agieed upon by Messrs Adams and Gavin. From Mi Gillillan, in reply to above, etc., ■tating the Battery Company -wrote on July 28th, and expressed its willingness to sign tramway lease and bond; and yet the line was not handed over for three months afterwards. That the Battery Company did not purpose doing anything further just now in the matter of claim for loss of pi oil Is, and wear and tear, to which they considered they were justly entitled, but would, as may be necessary at some I'utuie time, take steps to asseit their claim in this matter. Alpo staling that with regard to the wire rope they had no use for it. lvcspecting an anaimeinent mentioned icgaiding the purchase of hoif-cs, the mattiM had been rcfeired to Mr Adam I*,1 *, who, in reply, said that " the arrangement you mention was talked of on the tiannvay, but lie and those representing the Council nevei came to any undet stand ing lcgauling horses, or any thing else in connection with the line," and that Mr Adams stated ho valued the horses at £8 10s each, and the Company wore propaicd to pay for the four horses at this Kite. A lengthy discussion took place re these
applications. Os Murphy and Mills spoke srongly in support of Council covering the ilinin and widening the bridge in Whitaker street. O Gould opposed f on thegfoifnd that the biidgo refcired to had sufficed in more prosperous times, the Conncil had no money to spare, and the Arolia Riding rate account was in debt to thereat of the County already. lie was willing that Te Aroha should have every farthing of the money accruing from rates raised within the Hiding, expended therein butnotforthe towards cost of works in Aroha Riding, rest of the County to keep on contributing Mr Murphy: It' Cr Gould will move that another rate be levied over the Te Aioha after March 31st, I will support it, and their Council can pay themselves back again, Cr Mills iilso said lie would assist Council in the matter of levying- another rate on the Rrding, if the one so recently levied was not found sufficient; they could strike another rate alter the 3lst March on the Hiding. On the motion of Cr Gould it was resolved that no action be taken in the matter. An amendment proposed by Cr Murphy, that the Engineer be instructed ! to carry out the work, was lost on being put to the meeting. The Chaiiman in reply to Cr Murphy stated neither the Morrinsville-Te Aroha road, nor Bridge street, Te Aroha, were County roads ; and therefore the Council could not undertake to repair Biidge street. Slaughter House License : Resolved that Mr J. Woods application for renewal of slaughter house license be granted, Mr W. G King wrote requesting his name to be placed on valuation roll in respect of sections fonncrly owned by Mr T. L. Green. The Clerk was instiucted to take the nccassai}' steps in the matter. Resignation of Cr J. B, Smith:— Mr Smith telegraphed from Thames his resignation as u member for Waitoa Riding. Resolved that the resignation be accepted. Resolved that the Chairman be authorised to make the necessary alterations in Roll, for the placing theieon of Messrs Iluntei, (Mata Mata) and Giant, (Waitoa) as agent 'or the ownc-is ; the oh.'ik stating the necessaiy notices had been given and no objections received. P'iico of Meeting-. — In accordance with notice of motion gi\en at last meeting, Ci Muiphy moved that the future meetings of the Council be held at Te Aroha, seconded by Cr lleany. After considerable discussion the motion was put and cunui; Cis Mmpliy, [Jenny, Biunskill, and Mills voting lor, and the Chaiiman, and Crs Williams and Gould against. Cr Gould gave notice, that at next meeting of Council ho should move that tha i ebullition just passed be rescinded.
