GLADSTONE IN ITALY.
Florence, January 2. — A great popular demonstration and serenade was given yesterday in honour of Gladstone, who appeared at one of the windows of his apartment and responded to the acclamations of the people. Gladstone afterwards received a deputation of citizens, who expressed the admiration of the Liberal democracy of Italy for Gladstone's political achievements. Gladstone, who responded in ltaliaj^ thanked them for their kind wishes. The Italian papers say that Gladstone will treat with the Vatican for its support in the efforts being made to obtain autonomy for Ireland, Consignor Persico having commenced the negotiations.
