S. G. Whittaker, an American cyclisfc r started on October 27 to lower the 24 hours* bicycle road record of 305 miles, held by AA. McCurdy, of Boston. Whittaker's time was as follows (one course being 25 rriles out and returti, and the other 27 miles and a half out and back) :— 5O miles, 3hrs smit& 17 3-ssoc ; 105 miles, 6hrs 44min 22 1 ssec ; 155 miles, lOhrs 39min 40sec ; 210 miles, 15hrs llmin 33 2-ssec; 260 miles, 18hr» 34min 42 2-ssec ; 315 miles, 23hrs 12min 37 3-ssftc ; 323 miles, 23hrs 58min 35sec. Whittaker thus beat the record 18 miles.
