LIVELY, EVICTION CENE.
Firing Engine And .Battering Ram. "A correspondent at New, Ross telepraphs : --One hundred and fifty police, commanded By Colonel Miller, KM., accompanied the sheriff this morning'to 'carry the eviction of David Foley* of Ballykerogue, on the estate of Cojonel. Tottenham, The" force had with them a battering ram, consisting of a long and heavy pole, capped with iron, and they also look to the scene of action a military fireengine, f or., the purpose, if necessary, of drenching ,out the inmates of the house. The evicting party arrived at JToley's dwell- * ing, .~arid- after cautioning those, inside, Coloriel -Miller gave 6rders for the removal of the large' crowd which had gathered to a distance whence they could offer no op- , position, to the amrse of ;the pi-oceedings. This being done, amid a scene of some excitement, butwitJioutaeridus resistance, possession of the tenandy' was demanded from the inmates No reply beiug given, the emergency men began vigorously to work the ram, which in, about five minutes had brought down nearly ihe whole of one end -of the 1 house. The besieged then -brought'their forces into playt< "Ejecting hot water and injurious liquids .through garden syringes, they tried to drive back the emergency men, following up this action by a volley of," stones. The sheriffs men, however, were, protected by wicker shields covered with canvas,, and suetaitied little injury. The fire engine was then brought into play, and poured adeluge of cold water, intq,* the .building, until every corner was soaked by the stream. Drenched to the skin, and apparently bewildered by the continuous torrents of water, in less than an hour the ten men who occupied the dwelling surrendered, and were forthwith placed under arrest and marched into New Ross.
