GOLDEN BEACHES OF THE WEST COAST. (BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT, ) Wellington, January 4.
Advices have been received from England to the effect that Mr Brook Smith is busily e ngaged superintending the construction of a huge dredge to recover gold on the beaches between Hokitika and Grey mouth. It will be recollected that about six months aga he succeeded in forming a company in Christchurch to make an effort to obtain the gold known to exist on the West Cost beaches with the aid of one of Ball's patent drudgers, to represent which he was sent outirom England. The Mines Department granted him facilities by giving him a lease of a considerable area of beach, and he then went home to get a suitable machine made.
