Loxi>ox, December 28. The Irish Land Commissioners have reduced all judicial rents by an average -of 14 per cent., involving a reduction of £360,000 in rentals. The recent decision of the Irish Land Commissioners, reduciug all judicial rents to an extent averaging 14 per cent, has called forth bitter complaints from the landlords, and Unionist papers generally. Nationalist journals, on the other hand, express dissatisfaction with the decision, declaring . that the reductions are altogether inadequate. The " Morning Post " considers that the decision of the Irish Land Commissioners to reduce rents will render real property in Ireland practically unsaleable. Signor Brateno, Italian Minister for War, has asked the Chamber of Deputies to vote 60,000,000 of francs for armaments. Mr Gladstone in his speech at Dover =strongly opposed protection, which he thought had died twenty years ago, and he complained of the Marquis of Salisbury's ambiguous remarks on the -question. Referring to the disturbed •state of Europe, he trusted that England would refrain from interfering in any European quarrel. The Earl of Dunraven, in a letter to the '• Daily Telegraph," suggests that the House of Lords should consist of 100 members, elected from Peers of the -realm. The Grand Theatre, Islington, was -destroyed by fire about midnight. No casualties occurred, us the fire took place after the close of the evening's performance. The Servian Ministry has resigned. Mr T. Sexton, M.P. for Belfast .West, is seriously ill, and his condition is considered to be critical. The Agents-General have cabled that they never considered that the new mail contract included the conveyance of parcels insisted on by Mr Baikes, Postmaster-General, . The presence of British and American warships has been the means of preventing an outbieak among the natives of the Hawaiian Islands. The commanders of these vessels declared they would land a force of bluejackets if any revolt occurred. A heavy snowfall has taken place on the Continent, extending as. far south as Nice. Lieutenant Herbert L. Heath, of the Torpedo School of the ship Vernon, has been appointed torpedo instructor for Victoria.
London, December 30, M. Flourens states that tine statement respecting the bombardment of Eaiatea ha 9 not received official verification. "Le Temps" says if the bombardment actually took place the object was to stop foreigners from smuggling. The "Daily News" states that the French annexation of Wallis Island is the following out of a settled policy of acquiring stations in the Pacific. It is believed that the Government intend to suppress the National League in the counties of Dublin and Meath.
London, January 2. Archbishop Walsh, of^Dublin, who is at present at Rome, is endeavouring to neutralise the mission of the Duke of Norfolk as far as it concerns Irish affairs. Several papers state_ that Mr Gladstone intends to visit Rome for a similar purpose. ' Mr ' Parnell has recovered from his recent illness, and will at once resume the active leadership of the Irish National Party. . Mr John Morley is now convalescent, and anticipates being able to accompany the Marquis of Ripon on a visit to Ireland shortly. , Lord Salisbury, in the course of a speech, referring to the reduction in rentals recommended by the Irish Land Commissioners, said it would have the effect of alienating the landlords. A deputation of Legitimists waited upon Don Carlos, and urged him to assert his rights to the French throne, but he refused, declaring that he would nevor abandon his claims to the throne of Spain. The ".Times w to-day published an Australian Centenary Supplement, fully detailing the progress of the colonies since the earliest settlement. The British revenue for the quarter V shows a decrease of £430,000. An English team of footballers will sail for the colonies in March. A quantity of jewellery found upon, a man named Taylor, arrested at Birmingham, has been identified as portions of that stolen from the premises of Mr Gourlay, Melbourne. Taylor was employed by him while, in Melbourne, and after the robbery he eloped with his employer's wife.
Pabis, December 29. Lord Lytton, the newly - appointed British Ambassador, had an audience with the President to-day. In presenting his credentials, Lord Lytton j made a most cordial speech, in the -course of which he stated- that Her Majesty Queen Victoria desired to spare nothing to maintain the gbod relations at present existing between the two countries. President M. Sadie Carnotjeplied in the same spirit, and asserted that the friendship of England and France was the best guarantee of peace, and the liberty and progress of both nations.
Paris, December 30. , The time for receiving applications for space having been extended, the French Government have decided that France shall participate in the Melbourne Exhibition. The French Consul at Melbourne has been appointed Commissioner-General and, the Minister for Colonies institutes a commission [ forthwith, he himself acting as Presi- ; dent of the Commission.
Paris, December 31. | In the Chamber of Deputies to-day the New Hebrides question was discussed, when the deputy from St. Etrenne expressed the opinion that the equal division of the islands between , England and France was the, only logical solution of the difficulty.
Paris, January lsfc. M. Sadi CURNOT,|the President, had an interview to-day with the Ambassadors in France, representing the various countries. In reply, to their congratulations at his succession to the office of President he expressed an earnest hope that the fears of a European war would soon pass away. - Mr Gladstone has been" interviewed here. Referring to the New Hebrides difficulty, he said theoretically the settlement seemed satisfactory, but to j a logical, mind the plan proposed appeared unworkable.

. Buenos Ayres, January 1. • The meat export bounties fixed by the Argentine Government will amount annually to a quarter of a million of dollars on cattle and beef, and fifty, thousand on frozen mutton. The meat bounties operate from December 31.
Paris, January 1. Mr Gladstone, who is on a visit to this city, stated in the course of an interview that he would retire from politics if it were not that he felt that so long as the liberties of Ireland were at stake it was his duty to assist the cause to the utmost.
