MINING NEWS

A special meeting of the members of Jhe Gfoldfields Cominibtoo of the Chamber of Commerce was held at noon to-day. Pee sent : Messrs A. Nathan (who presided), A. Porter, C. C. McMillan, R. Spratfc, Newman, A. Saunders, and D. J. McDonald. Some discussion took place with respect to the unfair manner in which the Northern goldftelds had been treated by the Government. Mr Saunders stated that on Saturday he had received the following telegram from Mr A. J. Cad man, M.H.R.' / Estimates provide nothing for Northern goldfields. Have written strongly about ib to Mitchelson, as Auckland's representative in the Cabinet. Not being supporter of Government I can do no more. Present Government supported by 17 out of 20 members for Auckland. Would advise you to bring pressure upon them for consideration Northern goldnelde. Claims on supplementary estimates before too late." Mr Saunders stated that he had wired to Mr Cadman asking what were the allocations for Southern goldfields, to which the following reply had been received this morning — " Owing to nine months of the year having gone it is impossible to state exact amount and individual votes on Estimates, but under head • Minister for Mines ' total amount goldfields roads specially mentioned in detail Nelson, Westland, Otago, aixd Southland for financial year ending March next,over £21,000; for Northern goldfields nil. This is independent of vote for subsidy pound for pound which is allocated among goldfields all over the colony." It was decided to send tho following telegram to each of the Northern members: — "Com mifcfcee representing commercial and mining interests of Auckland expresses strong dissatisfaction that no sum has been, placed on estimates for Northern goldfields, while £21,000 has been voted for southern goldfields. They think an equally liberal subsidy should have been voted for the North," This requires immediate attention. —A. H. Nathan.
