A Miner Sets Fire to His Wife. SHOCKING ALLEGATIONS.

A miner at Newcastle is accused of setting fire to his wife. The wife has been unwilling to prosecute, bub the police took up

the case, and W. Howarth was charged. It was elicited from his wife and from James Powell, a neighbour, that Howarth, while partly drunk and in an ill-humour, set his wife's clothing alight with a candel because she did not "clear out" when ordered. Howarth now expressed sorrow, and pleaded he had blistered his hands in trying to extinguish the flames, but this statement was denied by James Powell. The Bench committed Howarth for trial.
