The State elections, which took place in New York, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, lowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Khode Island, New Jersey, Mississippi, Oregon, and the teriitory of Dakotah, on November 9, caused considerable excitement in Washington and elf^yherc. The Piohibition Amendment, of which the temperance advocates in Oregon felt .sure, was deieatcd by betw een 6000 and 7000 majority. The Democrats ate more than satisfied with the result, as the retains show Cleveland stands stronger with the people than was supposed.
