THE ELECTIONS.
The State elections, which took place in New York, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, lowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Khode Island, New Jersey, Mississippi, Oregon, and the teriitory of Dakotah, on November 9, caused considerable excitement in Washington and elf^yherc. New York, Virginia, Mississippi, and Maryland have gone Democratic; while Ohio, Massachusetts, and Pennsyl\ania remain in the Republican column In New York, Henry George, the labour candidate, received about one half of his former vote for beoietavy of State, and is considered politically doomed. The Piohibition Amendment, of which the temperance advocates in Oregon felt .sure, was deieatcd by betw een 6000 and 7000 majority. The Democrats ate more than satisfied with the result, as the retains show Cleveland stands stronger with the people than was supposed.
