The New Hebrides. THE UNION COMPANY OPENING UP THE TRADE.
Writing of the arrival of the Union Company's steamer Taupo at Savannah Harbour, the New .Hebrides correspondent of the Melbourne " Argus," under date of Nov. 17th, says :—" To-day the Taupo arrived in Havannah harbour with all her flags flying, notwithstanding that while she was steaming up the harbour there was a thunderstorm and heavy rain. She received a cordial welcome, and her coming caused joy to the British subjects here. Mr Macleod, of this harbour, has put about 700 bags copra as cargo on board. This is not bad for a beginning, and if Victoria will only persevere, the result, whether political or commercial, cannot be doubtful. Let the Australasian or Victorian New Hebrides Company bo at once formed, and let-it start operations by the next voyage of the Taupo, or as soon as possible. We hope now to have o, monthly mail from Melbourne."
