DESCRIPTION OF A MORTGAGE.
Avj editor who had succeeded in paving off a mortgage, on ft small farm of GO acr.-s of very superior land, thus graphically describes a mortoaire :— " A moitiiane is a queer institutiou.it makes aman'nwtle and keeps him poor. It is a keen incentive to action and a wholesome reminder of tho fleeting months and yenrs. It is as fully symbolic^ in its meaning as the hour glass and scythe that represents death. A mortgngc also represents industiy, because it is never idle and never rests. It is like a bosom friend, because the greater tho adversity the closer it sticks to a fellov,-. It is like abv ive eoldier— it never hesitates at charges nor fears to close m on an enemy It is like the sind hag in the Thug —silent in applcation, hut deadly in effect . It is like tho hand of Providence, it spreads all over ci cation and its influence i» everywhere visible It is like the grasp of a devil-fish— the longer it holds, the greater its strength. It will •exercise- feeble energies and lend activity to sluggish brains, but no matter how hard the debtors work, the mortgage works harder Bhll, A mortgage s a good thing to haAO in a family— provided always it is on somebody else's family. It is like a boil, always ag<rd *hing on some fellow. It makes one sour, cross, selfish, unsociable, and miserable, and rarely does him any good, only to exercise him. In that it is equal to Vigor of Life or tho latest patent medicine. We hare had our last one so far as we know ourselves. We would rather ha^e the ague than a mortgage. Adieu, old death-pall, a fond adieu."
