Daring Robbery from a Melbourne Bank.
A daring robbery took plaoe* from, the counter of the E.,,5., and Aw 0.- Bank, in Collins-street West. A clerk, of the Australian Mortgage, , Land and! Finanoe Company went to the bank at- 11 o'clock to cash a cheque ior £435. A nuim.ber.of persons were in the bank- at the time. The young, man received payment in notes,, placing them in aleather bag. Some one in the crowd said something about a £l>note being on the floor. Fvei.ybody looked down, and the young man for a moment relaxing his hold of the bag-, the thief quickly changed it for one exactly similar. No one saw. the exchange, which, was so smartly, effected that the robber disappeared before- the theft was discovered. The numbers of the -notes are not known. The. detectives are investigating the matter, but no clue has yet been obtained. The clerk for years has been in the habit of drawing* money on Saturday mornings, and he must have been carefully watched.
