THAMES GOLDFIELDS. The Warden's Decision on the Size of licensed Holdings. HIS OPINION OF THE FIND. " Fabulously Wealthy." Thames, November 11.
In the Warden's Court to-day, the Warden publicly stated that he would positively refuse to grant licensed holdings of 30 acres in extent at Hikutai*, and in no case would he givo applicants more than five acres, because according to the present regulations he could only order that one man should be employed to two acres. From tests made by Mr Montgomery, the Bank of New Zealand aud others it appeared that portions of the reef exposed were fabulously wealthy, and he did not think anyone should be allowed to hold large areas and only employ one man to two acres. He read telegrams sent to Government by the chairman of the Auckland Brokers Association stating that mineis here were "chafing under delay" in the granting of leases by him and made severe comments thereon. He also read a telegram which had been sent to the Government asking that the Moanataiari ground should be protected which action he .strongly condemned as no applications had ever been made to him by the manager for protection of the ground. The arden was very outspoken in his remark?.
