Rates — Fiom Messis Scott, McOonnick and Strange, requesting permission to work out the amount of their latos by making the road k adin" from Mr Stranges farm and connecting with the road to Waihou and IV Aroha, and directing Councils attention to the great need that existed for the carrying out of the proposed woik. In reply to Ci. Corbett, Cr. "Strange said the length of the proposed roaii was about sixty chains and would cost about £1 per chain to make. Cr. Corbett said : When this rate was struck, it was stiuck to meet picssing liabilities. Pie considered it would be a most objectionable precedent to lay down to allow lates lo be worked out in the manner proposed by tnose who chose to make such application. It had been threatened to issue summoii's for the reco\eiy of rates ; this however had not beeu done. Cr Butler said : Us thought it would be bette; to allow theso settlors lo work out their rates. Better this than to lob the matter of rates slide, and they couM not make briuks without straw. Cr. Moore : Thcie is no intention of lolling rates slide. Or Strange: We have only askel for jECO out of £200 tho amount of our rales, sjml wo do not desire that the work should be done otherwise than by contrai-t, and under thj supervision of tho County engineer. Cr. Mooie: I move that the application of tlie«e ratepayers bo not eatertaine.l ; seconded Dy Cr. Corbett. Cr. Strange: I move as an amendment that the matter be deferred for the consuieiation of next Council. The amendment was seconded and carried. Adjournment. — At this juncture the Council decided to go iuuo oounnitteo till rive o'clock, for the purpose of discussing several matt which there had not been time to consider prior to opening of tne meeting. Correspondence: Inward. — Cond't on of main road:— lo Chief Po&tmaster, Thames, stating that day labour was being employed from time to time in repairing the main road, and more than this could not be done until the fine weather set in. Owhaioa Low Level Tunnel:— To W. McCo nocnie, stating that owing to the dissolnlion of Parliament Council had not yet receive d the amount due for Crown and Native Lands rates, and in consequence had beeu unable to pay him the amount owing; the money would however bo paid as early as possible. Dog Registrar. — On the motion of Cr Walsh it wa» resolved to pay W. Dcd* account for day labour on i cads (9 da^s) less ihs amon nt due by hin for dog tux collectde also, that the am cunt cue Noble ( l J dap) be paid. Cr Niohoils objected to the above mentioned payment on the gioumls that the applicant had never received proper authority to do the_ work. . On the suggestion of Cr Strange, and with

Main Road Eepairs : — Cr Walsh drew attention to the necessity of eomj repaid being c ico.ed on the main road to Owharoa and moved, That three men be put on for a foitn'ght to do tho work. Cr Coibetfc seconded and tpoke st onjly in support of the motion CrNicholls said that it was highly necessary that a man be ke}^t at work o i the Hikuraia end, and another on the Te Aroha end of the main road for several days also, and propo3ed that this be done, c agsesting that Crs "Walsh and Corbelt include his pio position in the resolution. This was accordingly d:ne, ond the motion carried. "Financial Statement : — The Chauman said that some little time ago on the motion of Cr Strange it was resolved that a statement be prepared setting forth the whole leceipts and expenditure of each Riding of the County. This statement had accordingly been prepaied by Mr Kenny, the County Clerk ; and as it was only right the public should have fiee access thereto, he begged to move that The statement be laid on tha table, and be open far the infection cl the public during office hours, viz , on next Thursday, (Wednesday being a public holiday) and on "Wed nes lays and Satuidays aftoinards. Carr ; od. Thanks • — The Chairman said this being the last meeting of the present council, he wished to take this oppoitunity of thanking the members for the euppoit they had given him, and consideiation shown, etc. He believed they had all been actuated by the desire to do the bost they could for the county. Cr. Strange proposed and Cr. Moore seconded that a heai ty vote of thanks be accorded the chairman for the efficient services he had rendered Council during the past two years. The motion was earned unanimously and the meeting brought to a close.
