Horse Racing.

The disqualification of the Marquis of Aylesbury for life by the English Jockey Club, as cabled, arose out of the proceedings in the race for' the Harewood Plate, at the York meeting. The Marquis's horae Everitb opened iavoiuite for the Harewood Plate from Sub Rosa. Before the fall of the flag Everitb was shaken in the market, and two-thirds of the journey l.c figured behind Whibtington, Agnostic, Wibhing Well, and Sub Rosa. But at the bend he was pulling double, and seemed capable of winning when and where he liked, so that few people could believe hs had not done the trick when he passed the post hard held. All that he had done, however, was to make n dead heat, and, as mentioned above, a most unpleasant scene ensued, Martin being followed to the weighing-room by a mob, who might, except for timely interference, have handled him roughly. He was at once summoned before the stewards, and his explanation, we believe, was that ho thought he had won. as he unquestionably should have done by many a length. In the deciding huat 6 to 1 was laid upon Everitt, and though he did not show his previous lire, he won easily. Martin was then infos, mcd by the stewaids that he had been reported to the stewards of the Jockey Cbab, and the result wab as already stated. Referring to the prospects of the New Zealand Cup candidates, last week's "Canterbury Times'' has the following: — "There are only four ia it," is what the cognoscenti tell us of the New Zealand Cup, and when we press our inquiries further we are assured that Nelson, Artillery, Maxim, and Sextant* must furnish the winner. We confess it is difficult, just now, to name anything that beems likely to upset this powerful quartette ; but for reasons we stated last week, we are by no means satisfied that; Maxim will be the chosen representative of the Yaldhurst stable. A report is cm rent that Lochiel has been backed in the right quarter, and as Mr Stead is particularly anxious to annex the Derby, he may &aye the colt for that particular mistion. OBrien, too, has a second string in. Hermitage, who is looking and going as well as anything at Riccarton., and he may fancy the double in some other way than " the two Sextants." Nelson is still lame, but having watched his work for a couple of months, we ate now inclined to think that he will go to the post and settle the pr.e-ten.-ions of every tiling that cannot run the distance in something like 3min 54&ec. Aitillery, we believe, is a wonderfully improved horse, and, if not overtaxed during the ne>t three or four u eeks, will strip as lit as anything in the lace. Of the others Beres ord, Fair Nell, Lorraine and Torrent appear about the best. Beresford is a daik horse, of whom we know very little, and can only suspect that he has been kept as a rod in pickle ; Lorraine, who, if *.ound, would have a very big show, is troubled -with one of his hocks ; Fai< % Nell is sound, but doing badly ; and Torrent, we suspect has no liking for the distance. Now that the Hon. J. White's name is onthe lip of eveiy turfite, the following, which I clip from a recent Sydney paper, will piove interesting : — The fact of the team which the Hon. James White has despatched to Melbourne to represent him at the approaching spring camhal being minus a two-year-old to compete in the Maiibyrnong Plate, a race which the squire of Kirkham lias hitherto bid largely for, has led to the belief that the blue and. white banner will not be very formidable among the three-year-old eventb of nexfa season, and the question has oilen bean asked, what will its proprietor do foi a Derby horse for 1888 '! If the youngsters that have been prepared at Rimdwick ior some months past represented the strongest hand that could be counted upon, and il is quite probable that they do, then the show of success in next season's Deibys, Legcrs, (fee, may safely be reckoned upon as rather remote ; but on the other hand there are reasons for believing that the reserve force includes something not yet broken in which may assist in maintaining the customary heavy claim the " Falmouih of Australia " has held on the plums of the dishes made up by the A.J. and V.R.C.s. When the present season commenced, the Hon. James White boasted possession of no less than 22 two-year-olds, four of which only had been put into work, and although some of them had not been bred exactly on the lines whence "classic " winners spring, and making allowance for appearances being; all against the four at Randwick, following in the footsteps of Abercom, Trident, Nordenfeldfc, Martini-Henry, Bargo and Co., there are others quite well enough " got" to furnish victors of the most aristocratic races. Those which, perhaps, come undei the head of ' ' well-bred " ones, and which have not yet appeared on a racecourse even in private, may be mentioned : — B f, by Chester— Coquette ; Pharaphrase, by Chester— Phillina (imp.) (dam of Phil Athol); Voliney, by Chester— Vixen, by Brigadier ; br f, by The Pontiff— Gunild ; Volley, byMusket— -Lady Vivian (imp. ) ; bf. by Vespasian—Leonie, by Yattendon ; Ilex, by Martini-Henry — Lily Hawthorn (imp.); Ensign, by Grandmaster — Formosa ; and Tryon, by Robinson Crusoe — Walruk. Many of them, however, have no engagements, bub amongst those which have are Paraphrase, Volley, Ensign, Ilex and Leonie filly, but in addition to Escort and Knightsbridge only Ensign and Volley are in the A.J. C. Derby. Paraphrase, Volley, and Ilex, besides Java, are in The Oaks, and Ensign, Leonie filly, Paraphrase, Volley, and Ilex are among the number nominated for the Second Foal Stakes, From this it may be gathered that it would be rather premature to consider the ques- ! tion as good as settled that the Hon. James White will not be among those disputing possession of next year's blue and red garlands, ladies' races, etc. Should, howI ever, it come abouc that the three-year-old& are not thoroughly representative, there ! will in all probability be a strong lot of " twos," as the now yearlings total no fewer than 19, of which three are by Phil Athol from either Midnight, Cameo, or Vanity, eight claim Chester as their sire, the dams being Wichwing, Goldfinch, Cinnamon, Alpaca, andlolanthe, while Robin son Crusoe has two, Grand Prix one, and MartiniHenry is responsible for a quintette from The Solent, Rusk, Malacca, Dixie, and The Wheel of Fortune. The Kirkham stud is, perhaps, a more protensious and wellfilled establishment than most people are ready to believe ; and in addition to tho hires there are no less than 49 brood mares, among which are such as Uralla, Angora, Superba,Episode,Malacca,Temple, lolanthe, Mascotte, Capra, La Princesse, Kaipara, Princess Maud, Etna, Cinnamon, Ultima, I Moonstone, Jewel, Cameo, The Alpaca, Kathleen, and last, but by no means least, Lady Chester. Several well-known local sports hero potted nice littlo sums over Oakleigh's win in the Caulfield Cup. One woll-known tailor netted over £300. Rumour says that Artillery's full brother with the top cars, Balista, is the best thing ,in Wrights stable. & .«jd
