LATEST PARLIAMENTARY. Wellington

The Cabinet are rather more than half through with the preparation of their •scheme of retrenchment. I have authority for saying that the reductioas made amount to between a quarter -tofsa million and three hundred thous&M pounds. TTh-e ;. amounts have been taken off lAepartoients, and the details have not yet been worked out, so that it is impossible to say how salaries ar« affected. The reductions are, however, of a most sweeping character, and extend over the whole colony. Education suffers with the rest. The Midland Railway business has been aihardinsit to crack, and this will probably be dealt with at some length. Despite many statements made to j the contrary I illiterate my already expressed opinion .that no attempt will be made at a ravkion of the tariff this session, although additional taxation in some form is almost sure to be imposed if the reductions .do not cover the de" ficiency. Strong opposition will be made to a further issue of Treasury Bills, owing to the large aia«simt thai would be required to carry (the country over till Aprii or May, when the House meets again. Nothing has been decided by the Cabinet with regard to the new loali, but the fact is recognised that it cannot be done without. The amount has not yet been discussed in Cabinet.
