FRENCH MILITARY SCANDAL.
ATTEMPT TO IMPLICATE BOULANGEE.
THE HESCUE AT AUCKLAND ISLANDS.
WAS THE AWARUA POACHING? Melbourne, October 12.
Paris, October 11. The scandal which has arisen here in connequence of the arrest of General Caffarel, Assistant Secretary of the War Office, on a charge of selling military decorations, is daily growing owing to fresh attempts being made, showing the existence of great corruption amongst officials holding high positions in the War Office. The Government attempts to implicate Generals Boulanger, Wilson, and Thibaudin in the War Office scandal have failed.
The Victorian Government have received a communication from the New Zealand Marine Department, inquiring whether the schooner Awarua landed any sealskins from Auckland Islands, as at present this was the close season for seal fishery. The Customs Department, replying, informed the New Zealand authorities that 176 skins appear on the Awarua's manifest, but no entry has been passed for them. It is believed the skins are intended for shipment to London.
