Londok, September 30. Archbishop ' Walsh, who recently suggested that a ' conference should take place between Irish landlords and tenants, with a view to the adjustment of their differences on the question of rent, has been invited by tfte Convention of Landlords, which lately met here, to nominate tenant delegates. The Archbishop, in replying to this communication, states that though the Convention had ap proved of the proposal in the abstract he is not sanguine of success, and fears that there must be further delay be fore the tenants secure the advantages for which they are agitating. Mr Joseph Chamberlain, addressing a meeting at Birmingham, said that two-fifths of the Irish people were op" posed to Home Rule. Ho maintained that Mr Gladstone was greatly to blame for the present unsettled state of Par liament with regard to Irish affairs' He considered that Mr Gladstone, instead of agitating for Home Rule, should devote his attention to such questions as .the securing of religious equality, ]ocal self-government, and economy in the official adminstration of that country.
London, October 3. A thousand unemployed sugar refiners marched in procession to Hyde Park to-day, and speeches wore made condemning the system of sugai bounties.
London, October 2. A syndicate is willing to purchase the Lockwell Silver Company, Silver ton, for £100,000. The London di rectors of the Gippsland Goldmining Company are : — Messrs Archibald WiT mott, Charles Clark, and Alex. Macrae.
Rome, October 2. The visit of Signor Crispi, the Italian Premier, to Prince Bismarck, at Friedrichsruhe, is regarded as foreshadowing the entrance of the Italian Government into the Austro-German alliance.
