Russell, re-elected for HawkeY Bay, is tho sou of the Hon. Colonel KußFell, late of the 581 h Rcffimont, formerly a member of the New Zealand Le£i lativc Council, and Native Minister in Jk SLafford's administration in 1865. Captain Uusscll accompanied his father to 'New Zealand in 1845, and was sent Home for education at Sandhurst Royal Milita* y College Entered the army In 1855, joining the 58 uh Regiment ; served in New Zealand, returning to England with the regiment, whe.-e he exchanged into the 14th, aud joined that regiment in the colony ; retired -from the army in 1802, settling in Hawke's Bay as a sheep farmer. He represented hit, disliict for several years in the Provincial Council until the abolition of the provinces in 1876. He was elected to the House of Representathes in 1875, jointly representing Napier with Sir Don lid McLean. Captain Russell made his mark in Pariiameiit in 1885, when he moved that the Estimates of the Public Woi ks be reduced half a million. His re election is veiy popular in Hawke's Bay di&tiicl. He is a member of the Education Board, County Council, Waste Lands Board, and other 3ocal bodies, and President of Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. John Dayies Ormoxd camn to New Zealand with his brother-in-law, LieuteiuintGovernar Eyre, in 1847, to whom he acted as private secret .ry. He settled in Hawke's Bay in 1854, taking up a large block of Maori country near Pcrangahau. He taok .anjactive prat in secm-ing the separation of Hawke's Bay from WeUinglon Province in 1838, and wan Superintendent for many years up to the time -of a'boliiion. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1C63, and «at for dive till IC3I, when he was beaten by Mr W. C. Smith. In 1884 was ejected for Napiec. Mr Ormond was Minister of Public Works in the Fox Ministiy, and held the mine poitfolio in the Waterhouse administration, and again in the Atkinson Government of 1876 - 77. At the termination of the native ■war he received the bhanko of Parliament for his services in the defence of theEa^t Coast disirict, over which he wis Oo^e vnment agent. He is Chairman of the Educa tion and Harbour Boaids, and is considered the most clear-headed busine- s man in connection with local administiation in the district.
