The New Railway Time Table. A Vigorous Protest.
Much indignation was felt at To Aroha on it becoming known on Saturday last that the Government, on and aftsr the 10th inst., purpose providing Te Aroha with a tri-wcekly train service only. A public meeting will probably bo at once called to consider tho matter and the best steps to take with the object of quashing this attempt to injure Te Aroha and the popularity of its baths just at the commencement of the season too. The late Governmenfc did all in their power, apparently, to favour llotuora and retard Te Aroha, but this lasb adds insult to injury. Ib is hoped thab the Auckland press and people will join in a protest against so great an •injustice. Had this step been proposed at the commencement of the winter, solely from a desire to retrench, and if the daily service had been again resumed during the summer season, it would liave been more reasonable ; but to do so now at the opening of the bathing season, and just when the services of a highly-qualified resident medical practitioner have been secured thi'ough the unaided (by Government) exertions of the local residents, it is not to be quietly submitted to. A large and representative public meeting was held in Te Aioha Public Hall on October 3rd, to consider the action of the Government in depriving Te Aroha of a daily train service and that, too, as the summer season is commencing. Several of those present strongly protested against the injustice of tin's move, which cannot be considered retrenchment of a satisfactory nature, seeing that the revenuefrom the line is bound to suffer, while the stationmasLer at Te Aroha and other expenses so on as before. The daily soi vice is to be continued to Cambridge and Te Awamutu which have not the attraction of either baths or goldfields. To make the evident "hit" at Te Aroha the more apparent the Domain board have just arranged to publish a handbook and guide to the Springs and district, prepared by Dr. A. Wright, a->d other movements are on foot to forward the interests of the district which this alteration will seriously interfere with. Jbiesoiutions were passed protesting, they will be sent to the Minister of Public Works, Mr Hudson Traffic Manager and the a&sistance of the members tor Waikato, Thames, Coromandel, arid Tauranga will be sought. — Auckland Star.
