THAMES HARBOUR BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Haibour Board was held on Tuesday last when there were present — Messrs Carpenter (in the Chair,) Wood, Pitkethly, Walton, It. N Smith, Stcedman, and Bawden. The Up-Country Wharves, Paeroa :— The Wharves Committee re the Paeroa and Junction wharves recommended that Mr Bayldon had been instructed to have the repairs cairicd out under the supervision of Mr Holiorield, and that Mr Edwin Edwards should be appointed sub collector of tolls for the Paeroa district, the remuneration to be ten per cent, on all sums collected by him for the Board. The Harbourmaster repotted re the various wharves as follows :—": — " I proceeded to Te A roh a List week as instructed, a ltd en route had another overhaul of the Ohinemuii whaif, and see no means of repairing it without stripping le decking and possibly the .stringer", and driving the piles again to their proper depths, but I think the details may safely be lefc to Mr SchoGeld'i judgment.

To Aroba : —There are, absolutely no wharves tit To Aroha worth paying attention to. The only apology for a wharf is a small affair erected by the Thames Steam Navigation Co., jnst. below Hie Railway Bridge, ami is situated inside •he railway station enclosure, and the R/iiltvny Department may at any time find them in the \>ay and order them off. To erect a wharf any whet c below that will cost a considerable sum to form an approach to it, as there is only a narrow ii \ge on the river bank, and at the. back of that is a swamp which would require a considerable amount of filling and formation. The only other landing is Dib*ell's, wheie the goods are simply put upon the rim* bank, so th^t at present 1 think it would be unwise to interfere with matters there, more especially as the Oliinemuri County Council is working very hard against the Harbour Board, ami has sent circulars round the neighbouring Counties and Road Boards, asktheir co-oper itian against the Harbour Board, and as there are no wharves needing attention or lepaira nt To Aroha, I think it would be detrimental to the Boar i'sinteiosts to move yet. The time may come, and shoul 1 the Waitoa diggings bo nny goo I, will eomo, when con siderablo whiuf accommo Intiort would be necessary; then woul 1 be timo to move. I saw Mr Edwin Edwards wh<>n in Paeioa, an 1 he signifi-ul bis willingness to accept the term* mentioned, and hoped that after a trinl the Board would be able to offer better term*. —The report was a lop ted. Mr Clias. Ahier applied for the position of collector of whaifage dues.— U was decided to appoint Mr Edwards for Paeroa, while it was resolved to inform Mr Ahier tint a collector was not roquiied at To Aro'ia. The Loan Refused.- -A communication was received from the Marine De partment in reply to the Board's letter of the 23rd August asking for a loan of £2000, secured on debentures of 25 or 30 years, for the purpose of filling in the outer T of Goods Wharf, to the effect that the Government were unable to accede to the request of the Board. Under these circumstances the Department wished to know whether the Bonn! desired the plans forwar led to be submitted to tlia Governor-in-Council for approval. The Chairman and Mr Wood spoke against money being borrowed for the purpose of filling in the wharf with mullock and concrete, considering that the present wooden structure oould be repaired. Mr Smith spoke in support of the work* Mr Steedman proposed and ILr Smith seconded : " That the plans be submitted to the Governor for his approval. " Carried.—" Thames Star."
