PETITION TO THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS.
Ture following is a copy of the petition which has boon foi warded by Mr J. A. Dobson.as chairman of the public meeting inferred to above :: — • " Your petitioners respectfully dosire to direct ymu attention to ceitiin changes advertised to come into force on the Auckland railways on 10th inst. wheieby the prospeiity of this town and district is likely to bo very soiiously affected. Hitheito theio has been one train daily to and from Auckland ami intei mediate station^, but it is now intended that there shall be communication only on thiee days of the week. This alteration is viewed throughout the whole of thin distiict with much regie t and dissatisfaction for the following reasons : Ist. It will be pioductive of great ininconvenience and loss to business people, and others proceeding from here to Auckland because on account of the late arrival at te latter place, and there hem-: no return tiains Only on even' alternative day four days will be requited under the new regulations to do thnt which under existing airangements can be accomplished in two. 2nd. Travelieis proceeding hither on the days on which there is no through tiain to Te Aioha will have to complete the journey by couch fiom Morrinsville a distance of twelve miles over a rough and disagreeable road. 3rd. The time chosen for the alteration is singulutly inopportune, not to sny i annoyinir, for it takes place just as the summei i» uppioachiug, find when tli >re ir a ceiiainty of a steady im reuse in tli« nnuiboi of tourists and visit. us to tlio baths, upon which the prospeiity of this township mainly depend*. 4th. For these and other reasons of minor importance your petitioners pray that you will give this subject your earnest, and fiivomabla consideration, and issue such instructions as will secure for this township and district that attention to their requirements which their importance demands. And your petitioners will ever pi ay, etc. etc "
