The principal polling place for tho Jijden district being Waito's Mount Eden Hall, it was there that tho result of the contest was waited for by the greater number of thoso who were interested in the returns. About 7 p.m., some of tho out - district results were received by messengers on horsoback, and about 7.20 p.m. Mr M. Niccol, Returning Officer, announced tho result of the poll at Mount Eden Hall, viz. : MitchelI eon, 524 ; Conncll, 289. The announcement was received with cheers. Mr Mitchelson and Mr Connell, who were present, shook hands, and the former returned thanks for the honour conierred upon him. Mr Connell thanked those who had voted for him very sincerely. 1 hey had, lie said, elected the best man according to their own views, and he would bow to their decision. The returns for this district are as follows :—: —
Majoiity for Mitchelson, 436. There were Ihreo informal votes at Henderson. At Avondale, great interest vas manifested in the result, of the elections. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, men were found willing to ride into Avondalo \\ ith the returns fioni the moie distant polling places. By 7 o'clock JNJr Alexander Mucky brought in the returns from Tilirangi, and shortly _ afber- [ wards Mr Watson Dnncfin anived with the state of the poll at Hendeison. Still another settler wa- found willing to ride in over 12 miles with the returns from the YVaitakerci polling-booth.
