Society Women and Their Children.
In society there are many young married ladies who seem to think that their whole duties in life consists of "going out" as much as possible, and being as well and expensively dieted as possible, no matter what their husbands' means may be and what bills they may run up at their dressmaker s and milliner s. They are eaten up entirely by the craze for society, and it does not seem to enter into their biains that they have duties as wives and mothers. Quief) evenings at home with their husbands, who very likely have loeon working hard all day and have little inclination for constantly going out at night, are "such a bore" to such as these. And the idea that they owe a duty to their children, putting affection aside, and should be with them some parb of the day, strikes them as ludicrous and absurd. There are some even who openly avow that they do not care at all for their children and thai they are a necessary eyil. They must be brought down for five minutes by the nurses in the morning, and after that they may be dismissed from thought for the rest of the day.
A woman brought before the Melbourne City Police Court lately had actually got drunk on hor own hair. She had cut off her flowing tresses, and sold them to a barber for five shillings.
