THE VOLUNTEER AND THISTLE. [REUTERS TELEGRAM.] New York, September 28.
The first of the races for the America Cup was sailpd to-day, over the club course, and was won by the American yacht Volunteer, by 19 minutes. During the race the wind dropped, and it was feared there was no chance of finishing within the prescribed time, but the breeze subsequently freshened and allowed the completion of the course. Within fifteen minutes after the start the Thistle was becalmed, but the Volunteer caught a wind which gave her a lead of two miles before the Thistle felt a breeze, and as the Volunteer had a fresher wind she was enabled to increase her lead, winning by 19 minutes and a quarter.
