After being taken round the shaft a great number of times, he fell to the ground perfectly naked, except that he still retained his collar, nectie, boots and stockings— every garment having been 1 orn off. Singular to relate, he has escaped with only a few bruises, but will be confined to his room for several jj a yy g — his nervous system having received a severe shock.

The Chinese Government has compensated the owners of graves on the line of railroad between Taku and Tientsin. The desecration of graves has been the great obstacle hitherto to railway construction in China, but this is overcomo by Uie power of the almighty dollar.
