The Mark Lane Iteftrpsx of August Bth, in its ro\ iow of tho British grain trade, says : Throughout tho south of England, the harvesting of wheat has been rapid, and the farmois are- busy threshing. So rapid has tho season advanced, that quotations for now wheat aro three weeks earlier than usual. Tho wheat crop of France is good. Estimated to bo 110,000,000 hectoliters against 105,000,000 in 1888. The Russian harvest reports are satisfactory, especially from Bessarabia and Podolia, doubtful in Volhyna, Minsk and Moghtlev, owing to excessive rain, fair in the Provinces bordering on tho Sea of Azov and River Don, and exceptionally fine in KhaikofFand Pultowa. Tho price of wheat in the Vienna market fell to a lower point on August 6th than had been known in 25 years.

Pacific Cables. The New York "Herald's" Ottawa (Ontario) correspondent, under date Aug. 15th, says a cable from London, received by the Minister of Railways, is to the following effect: — "The Pacific cable question stands thus : Sanford Fleming proposed that the Imperial and Colonial Governments subsidise a new cable from yancouvei*. The Imperial Government intimated that they could not by subsidy become parties to a concern which must compete with existing independent concerns. Tho Australasian Governments thereupon declared they could not subsidise a cable unless the Imperial Government co-operated. There is a sug?estion now beforo the Australasian and moorial Governments for a joint Government purchase of the Eastern telegraph and other systems, and tho joint construction of a Pacific cable, thus erecting a system of Government cables throughout the Empire. It is calculated that an annual payment of £60,000, mftde up of contributions from each colony interested would suffice. In connection with this subject," the correspondent adds, " it may be stated that Sir George Stephens, Sir

"Donald Smith f and some friends have lefb' ■on nn official visit to Winnipeg 1 and British Columbia. They will spend some time in Winnipeg, and then make an inspection of the British Cqlmnbia section of tho Tran continental line. A cable connection with Asia, and an Imperial subsidy to tho Canadian P.B.S.S. Service, will also be con sidered.''
