How Enland Competes With Germany and France.

England, in proportion to her population and wealth, is less heavily taxed than Germany and France. England is not burdened with compulsory military service, which is imposed upon all men in Germany and France for three to five years. Aside from the number of workmen annually taken away from labour, the vast standing army thus created is supported directly or indirectly by tho rest of the people. Food is at least as cheap in England as in Germany and much cheaper than in France, where the importation of food products is subject to taxes already considered and recently augmented. The condition of the wage-re-ceiving classes in the Bradford district in reported exceptionally good. Among the people great good has been accomplished in founding coffee taverns, which have rapidly increased in favour, and have done more than anything else to counteract the evil effect of gin and beer saloons. — Consul Grinnell, at Bradford.
