Losj)on, September 8. The total loss of life by the fire at the Exeter .Theatre is now found to amount to 190. Upwards of 50 bodies recovered from ths ruins could not be identified in consequence oi their being so dreadfully burnt as to be beyond all recognition. The Paris paper "Le Temps," in referring to the subject, states that the lessons of the disaster at the Opera Comiqne have been ignored. It. advocates the lighting of theatres and places of amusement by means of electricity, generated in a separate building, and states that the scenery used should be of a noninflammable character. There should be egress doors everywhere, and these should be constantly kept open ; and there- should also be a Fire Brigade in connection with every theatre, the machinists and others being the membeis. The seats in such public buildings should be constructed on the automatic tilting principle. If these conditions were not complied ■with, the authorities should refuse to license any place of public amusement In the House of Commons to-daj r , the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, replying to a question, said that, owing to the seizure of another Trinidad ship by the Venezuela officials, the Governor of Trinidad had summoned a British man-of-w ar to his aid. Previous outrages, Sir James Fergusson added, had not been redressed, but the Government could not allow this to continue. The Castlemaine Gold-mining Company, with a capital of £100,000, which has been formed to purchase the Garfield and Manchester mines ; also the Gippsland Gold-mining Co., with a capital of £120,000 to purchase the Tarrage leases, have been virtually floated.
London, September 9. A hundred and eighty boxes of fruit per Chimborazo have been sold, and fifty-five boxes were condemned. Oranges fetched 4s to 12s 6cl ; lemons, 7s to Bs.
Sydney, September 12. A boat from H.M.S. Nelson, whilst in Jervis Bay yesterday, was struck by a squall aud capsized. One of the occupants, Major Kobilliard, of the marines, was drowned.
