The Wangaratta murder.
BRIDGET MEPHAN SENTENCED TO DEATH.
The trial of Bridget Mephan, charged with the wilful murder of her sister, Ann Callow, of Wangaratta, on July 6th last, was concluded §on Saturday, at the Beechworth Assizes. The evidence conclusively proved that the prisoner had made repeated threats that she would be revenged for an alleged breach of agreemeul respecting property on the part of the deceased, and the witnesses further connected her with the time and place of the murder. A handbag found in the possession of the prisoner when she was arrested was covered with blood stains, which on analysis proved to be human blood. A bottle found on the premises where the deed was committed was also covered with blood and hair, the latter corresponding with the hair on the head of the deceased. After a short deliberation the jury returned a verdict of guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy. Sentence of death was then passed.
Italy is getting up an Abyssinian expedition and means to punish the darkies for the recent massacre of Italian troops.
