Expeditious Hay Gatherers.
Bju-okk a cry long the hay -making season will be upon us, -o in good time we this month present, for our readers' consideration an ingenious device foi gathciing hay on (he Held and conveying it quickly to \vheie\er it is lequired to be deposited. Once the cut grass is fit for stacking, time i.s eveiy thing in getting safely stacked and coveied from the weather. This contii\anee is called a "hay sweep," and it is described and figmed in v>oik by J. J. Thorns, called "Faun Ij.!plcwc:.ts and Machinery."
The *l»u\wl Yankre faimen, who have \u.;.dei hilly .-huii> «»\c- t.» mm> ami quic«c apinvhcn-ion tv appuoialc any labourvi\ui" notion of i\n» Kin«!, ha\o for yeav l>.i>t hVcn um"K tliH implement with satis-tieto-y robiih, to thrm ehrs The hr-t cut shov/s ])ivtty plainly lnw it is constructed, and the K'cond liow it is worked. The " sweep "' i.-> ju^t hat rn:iy he tei met a u^crsiblc hoisc-iako. with a hin.tmly-ma.le frame .attached. Two hoieco -in required, vhich respectively mmIU on opposite «ules of a wind row, guided by boy riders, as show n.
B} this means the sweep will gather t\* much as a quarter of a ton of hay at a load and take it wheie it is wanted. To unload the horses are simply turned away from each other, the bides of the ftamc being made to swing lound, until they face in the opposite diiecticn. Now what wa= the back of the rake has become the front, and the hoi so*, pull away fiom the load and leave ifc behind, and aie fixed up to collect a new load. The main scantling below should be a 4 by 5 and about 10 feet long. The lest of the timber mu&t be stiong enough to s and the work, a matter which may be left to the judgment of most men. It any reader of Thk Fakmkr tries this hay-t-weep the coining season, we hope he will wiite and tell us how it answeied.
