The Art of Boot -Polishing.
A St. Louis cobbler contributes this : " One-half of tho repairing of shoe uppers that come to me is made necessary by the excessive use of blacking. Tho ordinary blacking compounds are injurious to leather, even when used sparingly, and when the feather is dosed the efteet must be disastrous. Shoes would wear much longer if the blacking were applied better. In St. Louis tho excessive use of blacking grows out of tho excessive dust. After a thick coating of blacking and a good polish have been put on shoes, it is nothing unusual oO have it spoiled by dust in walking a block. In such cases, ten chances to one the wearer will daub on a lot more blacking, {rhing the leather an unnecessary layer of it. All this can be avoided by the use of a moist sponge, which dampons the blacking already on the leather ami does not make necessary another application. With the sponge several ' shinos ' can be got out of a binglo application of blacking, and at the same time dust will bo wiped oil" and the leather generally cleansed effectively."
