Oitt rates \\ ill amount to about the portion the County contribute to this road. Signed— John Mellon, Edward Bowler, CUus. B. Edw.uds, Allen A. Bowler." Cr Strange said : Ho only hoard yesterday °f this letter haviDg been hent, but he understood it was the desire of the i cite payers geneially to be allowed to york out their rate^ ; leaving the subsidies thereon to thu County. The Waitoa ratepayeis had no main County road within 12 miles of them. Ci Coibett reuiiuked that the Financial Repoit drawn up and submitted at last meeting showed t'lo necessity of levying a 6-4 d rate to meet present expenses, without going into any new works, and in the face of that, did not see how the request could be gi anted ; and if the moneyjwas not got in soon the Council night lose the Government subsidies. The granting of this application would nlso result in many similar ones being mada. Besides the conti actor Collett, was in possession of the conti act. Cr Moore : If such an application were granted, there would be many similar ones. Cr. Strange at some length strongly urged the claims the Waitoa ratepayers had for consideration, and the lack of passable roads to their homes : and with respect to Colletts contract reminded Council £100 of it was provided by Government subsidy, leaving only ii3s for Council to find and of that £12 had been guaranteed by Bowler Resolved— That the application bo not entertained. Unpaid Rates— On the motion of the chairurin it was resolved that the time, fifter which all unpaid rates would be sued i'or, be extended to October Ist. Mcßiinns Find.— Copy of a telegram from the chairman to the Minister of Mines was read, stating that he had put on two men to prospect for the best tracks to ronnect Paeroa and Waitekauri with Hikutaia find, and that lie should apply for assistance from Government, as it was raofetly on Native land. A communication was read from Mr J M. Rob^on enclosing a cheque for £5, which the subscribers asked Council to 'supplement and apply towards the cost of having a good track laid off to connect Ptieroa with tho ntw find. Coir' ftidorable discussion ensued as to which was the best way oi getting to the new diggings. Cr Corbett expressed himself Zinin favour of a track to connect wjth the Waitekauri hill track near Graydous. Resolved that £10 be added by Council

to the £5 subscribed towards cost of finding the best track: Waitcknuri Hill track and Lower Road. —On the motion of Or Corbett it was resolved that £15 each be experidod on repairing these roadn.
