(From Thames Correspond en t.)
A miner of considerable experience, who armed from the new " find " in the vicinity of Hikutaia this afternoon, informs mo that there is no cause whatever for any excitement regarding the " find. " Comparatively nothing has yet been done on the reef which is to be seen outcropping on the surface, and it would bo premature, from its appearance, to even hazard an opinion as to whether thclode will continue-downwards. Duringhis visit he was shown several pieces of stone in which colours of gold could bo plainly seen, but it would tako rich dirt to pay at present, owing to the difficulties which must be encountered in getting the quartz to a battery. Another reel has been found outcropping: on the surface, and five claims consisting ot about 130 acres havo beon markod out. A large party left here late on Saturday afternoon for the scene of the " find." Mr Cadman has telegraphed to the Minister of Mines stating that the Thames County Council have agreed to vote -€100 towards cutting a track to the " find," provided the Government grant a subsidy of £ for i', while the Ohinemuri County Council will probably make a similar application.
The Proposed Road. TiiAßir/5, Aug. 31. In reply to a telegram from Mr Cadman requesting a Government subsidy of .1" for £ to the Tlmmes and Ohinomuri County Council for cutting 1 tracks to the new find at Hikutaia, the Minister of Mines states that the (iovernment will Le willing to consider favourably an application from the counties interested for a moderate subsidy towards ay orking the country in which the find is located. The countiy is thickly coveied with bush, and at present almost inaccessible. It- will be absolutely necessary to cut two tracks before operations can be successfully prosecuted. Only about ten feet ha\e yet been diivon on the reef, which is six feet wide, and thows excellent dish piospects. The gold, howovei, is fine, and is mixed with a large peiccntage of silver. The sandstone surrounding the reef, and the characteristics of the quartz are precisely similar to those at Waitekauri. It is reported that a parallel lode with that of the prospectors has been discovered by Mclsaacs, and it is believed that the quartz will prove pa} able, as it shows colouis of gold. Both reefs run about north-east. A paity of reliable miners who arrived late last evening inform me that there can be no doubt the reef will continue downwards, but they consider that the gold will be of poor quality, as it contains &o much silver. An immense area has been pegged out.
