WESTERN NOVELTY. A Horse that Delivers Newspapers In Indianapolis.
In this city, th> capital of Indiana, wheie, as a rule, even Robing that goes can be seen or had, tli3±-<j is one novelty of which few other cities can boast. It is a horse that delivers daily to regular subscribers the Cincinnati, "Enquirer/ This hoise_ the propei ty of William Amyst, has been trained to do this work by his owner, and so thoiou^lvly has ho learned his daily loute tha^ a.t no time in the past six months hjs he forgotten one subscriber, or any wguUv pabron who buys the "Enquirer." The owne? himself, knov n as one of the. be»fc nev\ s agents in the Middle States, has been Ihe horsed instructor, and taught the sagacious animal to know the street**, alleys and hues of Indianapolis?, and the house* of subscribers. The horse became famous for his fast trotting, stopping promptly and in good time at e-very place He knows hi.3. business so well that in the middle of any block where there should I c the last subst-riber, he -will turn aiound, taking thiough an alley for a s-hort cut to the next patron. The novelty of this delivery of. a great newspaper- like the Cincinnati M Eu-> quirer " hasmadesubscribers forifc by people m ho buy it, because they like to see the horse come once a day regularly and perform his lemarkable feat of lea\in£ his master off at the right house. Indianapolis, like other cities of any size, has all the competition that is wanted in the newspaper business, but Mhen the " Enquirer '' adopted the new system of delivery— por r"< .r.g of an original and difierent idea i " ,iiier from what has over been in vogin. .-clore- it knocked owfc small rivals, leaving an exclusive field for itself. It is a common thing to see a dog come to the fiont gate for his master's paper ; but when a horse comes along to ghe it to the dog— that act supplies the missing link in the circulation of metiopolitan dailies; and much doubt is expiesaed -whether or not some other and moie genial device will ever be heard of that in all respects will supersede this mode of delivery. The horse's ability may be readily estimated when I say that he delivers to no less than 420 subscribers, scattered all over Indianapolis and the suburbs, taking over five hours to complete the task. I wish your leader*? to understand that in the delivery of euch a route the horse does nofc liunp out of his harness (because he is hitched to a small cart) every time. As his part of the work is completed when he stops at tho subscriber's house, a small boy completes the job by taking the paper out of the little box on the cart and sells it to patrons who are in waiting- a regular time is kept up to reach each patron, which being known, the customer loses no time in waiting for his paper. The memory of this noble animal is certainly wonderful. Gentle as a lamb, he trois in 2.55 when necessary to have the first package at the prominent news-stand at tire Bates House ahead of all other dailies. So accurate is this animal in his daily course that the large sum of 65Cd01. has been offered by an admirer, but was refused, the horse costing three yeais ago only 7Mol. — Indianapolis correspondent ' New York Journalist."
Sir YVm. Jervois, speaking at a concert in Wellington recently, said :—" He must premise, as he saw so large a portion of the Wellington public before him, that he had no intention of wooing their suffrages at tho coming elections if he did ho certainly would desire that women suffrage should be established,, because he would claim tho voice of All ladies, as well as gentlemen"
