A Funny Captain.
Captatn Blackburn, of the Shannon, seems to be a gentleman endowed with considerably more zeal than discretion. This energetic officer caught sight of a green flag on Jubilee day Hying at the head of the mast on a yacht in Bantry Bay, and at once despatched a boat in pursuit of the treasonable emblem. The lieutenant who was in command of the boat informed the owner of the yacht, Mr Murphy, that he was liable to a fine of L5OO, and in spile of that gentleman's protests that he did not contemplate making war upon the Queen, but merely carried the flag as a signal, he confiscated the obnoxious bunting and returned to the Shannon. A more absurd proceeding could hardly be imagined, even if it wore legal, which is certainly open to doubt. The editor of the " St. James Gazette," however, is of a different opinion. " Her Majesty's ship Shannon," says this rabid patriot, "should have tired into the craft which flew the rebel flag in Bantry Bay and sunk her or carried her off as a prize. "
At an examination a boy was asked, " "\Vhati are the warmth -producing foods ?" 'ills r<tyly was. ""Cayenne pepper ■ and Jamaica' ginger." •' ■ • »« .' ••' .n
