A SINGULAR CASE. A Youth Charges Himself With Embezzling L 640.

]>v the steamer Manapouri to-day arrived a yomh named William Dunbar Bind, who, although not actually in custody, was ac" compamed here en route for Sydney by sfw-ial police oificer?, under whose sur- \ eillaneo he was. The Napier ' ' Ach ert^er' thu.> u,u rates the circumstances attending BintT.^ arrest at that place : " A youth named William Dunbar Birrel, about 19 years of age, walked into the police -tii ( ion on Sunday afternoon, and confessed to having embezzled the &urn of Lb'4o from ihe Commercial Banking- Company of Sjdney, N.S. W., in September last, he bein;i then employed as clerk in a branch bank at JSJolong, and he got away to New Zealand without being caught. Having told his story, the Inspector looked up the " Polu'e (ia/ette," and found that a man of the name given by his visitor had been "wanted" for some time, and the youth wa- accordingly taken into custody. It w.i^ a very ciuious thing for liim to do, some will think -to give himself up to the authorities, but as lie hid no money whenarie>ted, it is surmised that he wanted to get back to the scenes of his childhood. Birrel uas brought before the Court this morning and charged with the offence, and on the application of Inspector Bulien, was remanded for eight days, pending the receipt oi iniormation respecting the case from Sydney. This bright youth has been a le-uleut of Napier for some time past ; he is of th * aveiago height, oios-. eyed, respectably atoned, and did no work ; he probably ( ou'ld get, none to do. He got through his 111-irutten L6lO quickly." With regaid to Birrel's departuie for S\dney, tho Napier Telegraph of Saturday la'^t say.-: " The youth William Dunbar Bin <4, "who is charged with ha\ing cmbiv/led the sum of LO-iO from the Commercial Banking Company, Molong, N.S.W., was brought up, on remand, before Mr J. C. McCausland, J.}\, this afternoon. At the request ot the police, tlu 1 ir.founation laid against him here was withdrawn by leave of the Court. Acdiv^l v. ill be forwarded to Sydney by the -teamer leaving Napier to-day, where on aiti t n al at Sydney he u ill bo handed over to the authorities"
