New Guinea News. PUNISHING MORESBY ISLAND MURDERERS.
H. M. S. Han icr arrived at Cooktown from Pinner Island. Ah Gim, master of the wrecked ketch Pride of the Logan, wat> a passenger. All is quiet at the east end. Valuable peatl-shell lias boon discovered near Dinner I&land, Captain Mullen having 30 pahs, aveiaging IMb weight per pair. It has been blowing a heavy .south-east gale during: the last four days, but l.s now moderate. "The Lark passage, lately purveyed through the Barrier Keef, has been beaconed by a pilot schooner and crew. It will serve vessels bound to New Guinea going by Lii'nul L-land, and give thorn 40 miles weatherage of Osprey reef. H.M.S. Rapid has visited the north side of Moiesby Island, whoie the crew of the I'iide of the Logan were massacred and eaten, and destroyed se\eml villages, cutting down the cocoa-palms and the bush. H.M.S. Harrier also proceeded to that part of the island and .shelled several villager, which were deployed. Theso consist of one cr two houses, which can be inbuilt in two days. The only way to punish the inmdeiers would be by landing a party and tiaeing them out, which could easily be accomplished, a« no denso jungle exi&t on the ibland, where many inland ullages offer a safe icfuge to the coast nathc-.
