"STRUCK' HE." Good Reports From Gisborne.

Wellington, August 18. So frequently have the public heard of " struck ilo " in the Gisborne oil borings that very little attention is now paid to reports upon the subject. It seems, however, that the South Pacific Petroleum Company have struck very good prospects at last— that is, if the information coming: from the locality may be reliei upon. A private letter received in town yesterdaysays, "We have had another oil prospect during the week, but the people are so sceptical that no enthusiasm is to be worked up here, though the prospect is better than ever it has been before. Mr Weaver ,j the expert brought out from America to conduct the borings, has finished his contract and reported the prospept good, and invited several townspeople to go up and see the result. Messrs Carlaw, Smith,, and Maud were the only persons who went* and they report that there is 137 feet, of oil in tho well, some of which they brought down in bottles, and a jar of which they have sent to Sydney. What is needed now is to bore on until the pipe reaches a hard stratum. The last 60 feet of tho strata, has varied about every 6 feet to 10 feet,' so that ho expects 10 feoi at the most >yould i have to be sunk."
