diabolical Attempt to Burn a Household.
The Melbourne Telegraph says :-— " This morning at a very early hour those living in a house at Preston, occupied by Mr "Win. Lowes, were startled out of their frleep by an alarm of fire. Ten people resided iv the house and they all escaped, but it was with some difficulty that one of Mr Lowes's children was rescued. The house hud been set fire to at both the front and back, and a large case had been placed in fiont of the door, as if to bar exit. Water-taps connected with the house had been plugged up also, which leads to the supposition that a deliberate attempt was made to burn the whole household. The building was a wooden one, and was all consumed except two back rooms. A fortnight previously an attempt had been made to burn down Mr Lowes's house. The detectives have ihe matter in hand.
Before fighting Laing at Wanganui in January netft, Matthews lias Slaven and Costello, t\yo pugilists froni Australia, to meet in Auckland, so that ho has his hands pretty full for somo time.
