We hear with regret that Mr Edwin FTadiield, of W.,iorongoniai, whilst workin" at the New Find mine on Wednesday last, met with a serious accident. The Associated Banks have agreed to reduce the interest allowed on fixed depobit by one per cent viz., to f our per cent, and there can be little doubt but what the New Zealand Banks will do likewise. Business : To determine the ownership of a large number of blocks in Ohinemuri, as set forth in tho Native Gazette, August 3rd) amongst them Otamauianganui ; block, Mackytown, and blocks at the j Junction, PWioa, etc. Also for the purpose of appointing Native successors to deceased gianteea with regard to seveial large blocks. The proceedings will be of an important character, it being essential that the vexed question of j ownership in several of the blocks referred j to should be speedily decided before these j lands can be utilised. j By advertisement it will bo seen that ; the Waitoa Road Board purpose at their next monthly meeting levying a general rate of a half-penny in the pound. At tho Civil Sessions of the Supreme Com t in Auckland on Thursday last, before Justice Ward, the case of ThamesCoiomandel United District Charitable Aid Board v. County of Piako came on for he-iring. This was a suit for £406 0s 6d, being balance of contribution due. Mr Alexander appealed for plaintiff, and j as there was no defence filed, judgment was given for amount claimed, with £13 lGs 6d costs. Mr James Mackay, candidate for Coro inandel electorate, has arranged to address the electors as follows :— Paeroa, Thursi day next, 18th inst, at 7.30 p.m.; Karrngahake, 19th, at 7-30 p.m.; Waihi, 20th, at 7.30 p.m.; Whangamata, 22nd. Mr J. W. Walker will be a passenger for England by the R.M.S. Alameda from Auckland on Monday next, in connection with the floating of the Union mine, Waihi, and others on the London market. Mr Thos. Russell, C.M.G.. will also be a passenger by the same steamer. Mr W. H. Hazard's new advertisement appears in our columns to-day. Mr Hazard ia a thorough practical gunmaker, and has always on hands a very largo stock of sporting materials of every description for dale at moat reasonable prices. •The following is a notable instance oi successful advertising : A business man in Richmond, Cope Colony, advertised for a couple of smart boys. The next day his wife presented him with twins, sons. He rushed in a fury to the printer and stopped his advertisement. Newspaper men always | stand to lose somehow. A contemporary, speaking of the Midland railway woiks, says :— At some of th^ roadside hotels, when work is over, a very mixed community congregate to while away the time with the everlasting euchre. In one room one night last week were seen an Oxford M A., n Cambridge B. A. and a Trinity College (Dublin) man, assisted by anM.D., an ex-clergyman, an architect, and ex-wine merchant who was familiar with the classic precincts of the Portsoken ward- Each of these men, drawn to the East Coast by want of proper employment, j is now manfully handling the pick and shovel in the construction of our great Midland railway. j A man, sued for his newspaper subscrip ' tion at Melbou.-ne, pleaded that, though he \ had received the paper, he had never oidered it. Asked the Judge (Cope) :" If a baker left a loaf of bread at your door, and you took it and ate it, would you pay for that ? " Defendant : " Certainly, your Honor, but that is a different thing." His Honor: "Not at all. You eat the loaf and devour the newspaper." Verdict for he u mount, with costs. Thompon's truck : At the last monthly meeting of Tauranga County Council, held on Tuesday 3rd hint, £10 was voted in aid of prosptcting Te Poke district. Captain Turner, County Engineer reported that the To Aroha road the survey was completed on this side and camp moved to Thamoß Valley. He expected work to be completad in a few days. He suggested alteration in line to avoid heavy cutting und filling. Man doubles his evils by brooding upon them.
