The French Senate has discussed the teporC of the Committee on Consumption of Spirits. M. Claude said that the committee had come to the conclusion that drinking- spirits in France had reached such a height as to be a social danger. Alcohol was essentially a dutiable article, and it behoved the State to prevent its excesbive consumption, at the same time securing he utmost proiit to the treasury by the uppression of adulteration and other frauds. M. Kouvier approved the committee's repoit. He feaid the Government would prosecuto fraud wheiever discovered, and that the revenue collectors would bo insfcrugted to take vigorous action ft gainst the imposidoil.
