Papal Mission to Ireland. What Cardinal Manning Says.

Rome, June 24. — Monbigneur Persico and MonsigneurGualdi left for Ireland on a mission intrusted to them by the Pope. They are instructed to make personal observations and report on the political and social position of the Irish people. The London "Catholic News" has received a cablegram from Rome stating that the visit of the two Papal envoys to Ireland i-> purely on ecclesiastical matteis, and has no political B igi)ific«Mice. Cardinal Manning wi jtc? to the " Times protesting against 1U circulation of ft g^.t-6' ment from Rome that the Irish mission of Mgr. Per»ico and Mgr. Gualdi lias been i evoked at the instance of Cardinal Manning and the Irish Bi&hop, Walsh of Dublin, and branding the latter two as the active promoters of separatist intrigues'. The Cardinal says : "I gladly unite myself with the liibh Bishop, Walsh. He is but slightly known in England, except in the descriptions by those who are fanning the flames of animosity between England and Ireland. I am known in England, both to the Ministers of the Crown and to the leaders of the Opposition, and I will leave the charge to them, who well know my mind. Archbishop Walsh will answer for himself. We are neither intrigueife nor separatists." The " Times," in an editorial, excuses the first charge, saying that it had simply reproduced the Renter Telegram Company's despatch from Rome. Ib assures the Cardinal that it would judge Archbishop Walsh by his own wricten and spoken words. He was, in the strict sense of the word, a separatist. It was sorry if it had wrongly been led to believe that Cardinal Manning was a warm supporter of Gladstone's separatist policy, but if the facts were so peculiar no interpretation of language could alter them.
