THE LAND LEAGUE TACTICS.
It is not thought that the operation of the sixth section of the Crimes Act is intended to suppress the National League, but it is feared that the section will prove inoperative in any way against the League, owing to their having resolved to alter its name and constitution, and bring it under the protection of the Trades Unions and Benefit Societies Act.
Melbourne, July 26. In tho Assembly this evening, Mr Gillies (Colonial Treasurer) delivered his Budget statement. He congratulated the colony upon the satisfactory state of its finances. The estimated revenue for the current year is and the expenditure leaving, with' the present balance in hand, a balance to 1887-8 of The total amount expended on railways to June 30 was £20,000,000, upon which 4?r per cent, interest was realised. Ife was proposed to increase . the duties on imported sugars and produce of sugarcane to 3s 6d per cwt. ; bonded and refined in Victoria, 2s 6d per cwt. ; and on best other sugars 6s per cwt. ; the duties to come into effect on July 27. The duties upon dressed timbers would be variously increased, undressed timbers, including kauri, being admitted free.
