The diamond is found imbedded in hard, rocklike, bluish earth, believed to be of volcanic origin. Fifty thousand tons of soot were taken from London chimneys last year. A cement very much used afc the present day in China and Japan is made from rice. It is only necessary to mix rice flour intimately with water and gently simmer the mixture over a clear fire, when it readily forms a delicate and durable cement. • Cold-air machinery has been successfully used in the construction of a tunnel at Stockholm by freezing the gravel before tho excavation and keeping it in that condition until the lining was in position. In this way several large buildings have been undermined. i
