Supposed French Escapees -From New Caledonia.
The police luuve arrested two men at Cooktown. Their names are Philip Fonilie and Leon Andrien, French and Italian .respectively. They were brought down from Piper Island lightHhip by the steamer Birksgate, and they say that they, shipped as carpenter anc Cook on boardthe Italian merchant ship Croersert,, at Marseilles, for a port in New (Guinea. The captain, ill-treated them on the voyage, and on their, arrival on the New Guinea coast boats were lowered for the purpose of watering the vessel. The same night the men s»tole the. boat and put to sea. After a passage of 19 days they struck the island coast to the south of Somerset. The boat was smashed on the rocks. The men t>wam ashore and were attacked by natives. Andrien .-shows, a wound on the upper part of the left arm. He said he received it with a native spear, but it more resembled a levolvcr wound. They marched 25 days along the poast, purchasing food fiom the natives with Ereiich money, and were eventually taken on boaid the Piper Ihland lightship by the natives. They are supposed to be French escapees from New. Caledonia, and will be. brought up at the police court as vagrants.
