The Great Footrace. MILLER Y. ASHWORTH FOR £1,000.
This afternoon thero took place at the now famous Carrington Running Grounds, Sydney, a hundred yards footrace, for the largest stake over competed for in New South Wales. Tho competitors were Robert Ashworth, of Bathurst, and Harry Miller, lately of Cunnamulla, but a native of Sydney. Ashworth was theresupposedtohave a moral certainty, and, as everyone who is well acquainted with the sport knows, ho was backed down to 3 to 1 long before the first heat was run. All matches at the Carrington Ground are managed by the officials, Mr John Daley acting as judge, and Mr Joe Kean as starter. The men both came out together, and after being warned that either going over would be pu,t back, they got on their mark. The pistol went to a beautiful start. Ashworth was quickest on his legs, but he had not gone ten yards when Miller passed him, and coming away won easily by four yards in 10 l-ssec. The betting was oto 2 on Miller.
