Proposed Experimental Plane AN APPEAL TO AUCKLAND.
Thames, this day. Strong endeavours are being made to raise the necessary wherewithal fox* the election of the proposed experimental plant in connection with the School of Mines at a co^t of £1,250. Subscription lists have been, prepared and a start was made to collect yesterday with very satisfactory result. It is generally considered, however that Auckland should also assist, being largely interested in the progiess of the mining industry. The Government have promised L6OO, provided that the remainder is raised by subscription, while the Bank of New Zealand lias also agreed to contribute LlOO. This leaves L 550 to be collected, and there seems every likelihood of Ll5O being subscribed locally. It is confidently anticipated hero that the balance of L4OO will be forthcoming from Auckland, in the event of which the proposal can be brought to a successful issue. Should Aucklanders not assist, however, the whole matter will probably lapse, and thus would bo lost to the district one of the most desirable institutions, aiz., a plant by which its complex ores could be tested with a view to ascertaining how they can be most profitably and economially treated. Mr Bruce, secretary of the School of Mines, left for Auckland last night in connection with the matter.
