Jubilee Record in Ireland.

A book lately written for the Jubilee of the Queen, for the purpose of showing the progress ot the nation during the fifty years of the Queen's reign, made it clear that while all other parts of the empire had flourished the condition of things had been most disastrous in Ireland. The author says under the heading of Ireland the present reign has been the most disastrous since that of Elizabeth, as the following statistics &how :— Died of famine, 1,2*25,000 j persons evicted, 3,608,000 ; number of emigrants, 4,18(3,000. Evictions were more numerous immediately after the famine, the landlords availing themselves of the period of greatest calamity to enforce their " rights." Official returns give the number of families, and these averaging seven persons we ascertain the actual number of persons c\ icted : —
